To maximize light output use a T5 fluorescent or LED light source that will wash the ceiling with light. This helps to create a brighter ceiling that bounces and reflects light throughout the space without glare. Combine this with lots of natural daylight to increase the overall light levels in a room.

Plus they are often combined with a wall washer so the architecture is fully on display. Uplights can also act as wall washers when installed in the floor especially in contemporary homes. The effect of many wall washers and pot lights can be a bit modernist and even a little cold so use this effect only if you enjoy a minimalist gallery-inspired look. Ultimately when implemented correctly a great lighting scheme won’t necessarily be the first thing you notice. But layers of light coming together to bring out the best in your space will make sure that wherever your eyes do fall all they will see is a perfect photo-ready finish.

Down lighting can sometimes be referred to as general lighting. Once it was simply the only light source in a room — that single fixture in the middle of the ceiling. If this is your only option placement and quantity of fixtures are the keys to attaining a balanced lighting level while reducing dark corners. Pot lights are also considered downlighting.

Halogen compact fluorescent and LED bulbs come in a range of warm or cool hues. Much like the color of your walls the type of glow you want is mostly a personal decision. If your walls are covered in cooler tones you might want to warm them up with a lightbulb that casts a warm glow. Conversely you may want a cooler glow to brighten up a darker space.

In a renovation on the other hand we have to consider what effect a new skylight will have on the efficiency of the existing building. In some cases the additional sunlight (and therefore heat) can help reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the house. It depends greatly on the local climate but also on the design of the building envelope of the house.

The line between these two can be blurry as a chandelier is essentially just a large (and often more decorative) pendant light. Chandeliers also are more likely to have multiple bulbs (which help create more layers) but what is or is not a pendant is still a gray area especially with more modern fixtures like the one here.

It’s important to understand that even on a sunny summer day natural light from a single window is not always sufficient to thoroughly light a room and of course this is especially true come nighttime. Additional light sources near your window will allow you to subtly fill out the light scheme and achieve a balance so the space feels beautiful at any time.

Recessed directional lights provide focused illumination for each piece of art — or in this case for an alcove dedicated to a sculptural bouquet of flowers.

Bright idea for unexpected lighting: Look for opportunities to install light fixtures in alcoves tray ceilings and wall niches to trace interesting lines. Notice the hidden lights in the ceiling alcove above the cylindrical fireplace mantel here.
